How long do the training courses typically last?

Teenage Driver Education consist of 32 hours of classroom instruction and 14 hours of behind the wheel training, and can last anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months. For individuals under 18, drivers education also consists of 30 hours of supervised driving with a parent/ guardian (ten of these hours at night). For additional information, go to http://www5.esc13.net/drivers. There is also a 6 month waiting period after learners permit is issued for practicing with experienced drivers age 21 or older. There is to be not wireless communication while driving, and they must wear seatbelts– IT’S THE LAW.

SPELL OUT THE RULES- The risks teens face in the driving environment are huge! Parents and guardians need to teach safe behaviors from the beginning. So, before obtaining the provisional license is the time to develop the Parent-Teen Driving Agreement to outline expectations and set consequences if the expectations are not followed. For sample agreements, check with your insurance agency or view http://www.cdc.gov/ParentsAreTheKey/agreement.

Do I have to take driver’s education to get a Texas driver’s license?

Driver’s education requirements vary depending on which state you live in, but you should be aware that most states require new, teen-aged drivers to complete both a driver training course in addition to a driver’s education classroom or online course. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) requires all individuals under the age of 24 to complete a driver’s education course before receiving a driver’s license.

What driving education services do you offer?

TOE Driving Academy offers teenage and adult driver education, defensive driving, and drug and alcohol awareness classes, in addition to on-site permit testing. We also offer opportunities for international clientele to get their Texas Driver’s License as well.

Teenage Driver Education

In a teenage driver education course you learn things that will prepare you for driving on the road for the first time. This includes driver license rules you have to abide by. For example, drivers under the age of 18 have to follow rules such as not exceeding one non-related passenger under the age of 21 in the vehicle, not driving between midnight and 5:00 am, and no use of mobile devices even if they are hands-free. In this course, you will also learn about financial responsibilities you will take on when you start to drive like what you would owe if you got into an accident, monthly insurance payments, yearly inspections, gas, and repairs. Furthermore, you will learn about your state's traffic laws along with defensive driving techniques. Following state traffic laws include abiding to road signs, penalties for driving without a license or with a suspended license, seat belt violations, and driving without insurance. Also, you will learn how to read driver's attitudes and emotions and learn how to properly drive with heavy trucks, and also drive in harsh weather conditions, such as severe weather or snowstorms. For this course, you should bring your learner's permit if you have one and a document verifying your age such as a birth certificate or passport.

Adult Driver Education

Adult driver’s education is a 6 hour course required by the state of Texas for anyone who needs a new driver’s license, has an expired or revoked license, or is coming from another state.

Defensive Driving or Driving Safety

The purpose of defensive driving is to SAVE lives, REDUCE injury, and MAKE YOU a safer driver. In a defensive driving course, you will be educated on how to be a defensive driver through exercising caution and good judgement while on the road. This will reduce the risk of accidents. You will also be taught how to overcome stress, fatigue, emotional distress, and road rage which could lead to an unnecessary accident. Further, you will learn about the effects drugs and alcohol can have on your performance on the road and what the penalties are for being caught driving under the influence. Being under the influence has a huge impact on an individual's judgement, motor skills, and senses and those who have had any substance that could have affected their ability to perform normally should not be behind the wheel. You can get a ride with someone else or pay for a taxi or Uber. In this course, you will also learn how size and speed can affect damages in a crash and how to limit and avoid forces of impact. In addition, you will learn about all the safety equipment in your vehicle and ways to avoid traffic crashes. Finally, you will cover the state traffic laws.

Drug and Alcohol Awareness Classes

The primary objective of this course is to challenge students to share the roadway with other drivers in a responsible manner. By recognizing the detrimental effects of alcohol and drugs on safe driving practices and decision making, students will be better prepared to avoid collisions and conflict with other drivers. As a step toward attaining this goal, students will devise a personal action plan for future safe driving practices.

Course objectives:

By the end of the course, students should have a basic understanding of the following:
  • The extent of the problems in our transportation system caused by alcohol and drug use
  • How alcohol and drugs act on the body and on the driving task; the problems resulting from the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs; and the impact of these substances on our society.
  • How alcohol and drugs alter a person’s Attitude States and which Attitude State is necessary for safe driving
  • The significant alcohol and drug laws in this state that relate to the operation of motor vehicles
  • The reasons young and newly licensed drivers have greater risk factors relating to the use of alcohol and/or other drugs and driving.
  • Responsible driving strategies that can help make drivers more aware of alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers
This course is a drug and alcohol driving awareness program (DADAP) that has been designed to address the multi-faceted needs of students and course instructors as well as the requirements of state regulatory agencies. The Program for Drug and Alcohol Awareness is an outgrowth of over twenty years of research and development of the DTA Program for Driver Improvement, initially designed by the Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance Company, with subsequent research-driven revisions by Driver Training Associations, Inc.

The following specific factors that are crucial to safe driving are addressed in the course: 1) the recognition that alcohol and drugs have a significant impact on driver’s feelings and emotion; 2) the understanding that a driver’s Attitude State has a bearing on whether or not he or she is able to operate a motor vehicle safely; and 3) the implementation of responsible driving strategies that can enable a driver to avoid the dangers associated with alcohol/drug and driving. The course provides students with an understanding of how alcohol affects the individual and our society as a whole and encourages responsible behavior, with special emphasis on abstinence if one is planning to operate a motor vehicle.

On-site Permit Testing

  • You must be 15 years old to take a permit test and receive your learner's permit. Required documents to bring include:
  • Proof of identity and citizenship
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Proof of classroom portion of driver’s education
  • Proof of enrollment in school
